Next stop for Dr. Dodd was the corporate world, as he signed on as a research scientist for Unilever, an international manufacturer of leading food, home care and personal care brands. There, Dodd developed the foundations of his "electronic nose" and began working in the area of smell receptors. He moved on to lengthy career in academia and research, lecturing in biochemistry at the University of Warwick, where he founded and directed the Warwick Olfaction Research Group, the only international multi-disciplinary smell research group in the UK.
In 1994, Dr. Dodd put his extensive knowledge of the science of scent to work opening the world's only one stop aromascience and perfumery business on the coast of Scotland. Dodd's pioneering perfumery created the first whiskey and chocolate-scented perfumes, among other notable "firsts" and "onlys." But now, the scent scientist has taken on another quest - to use his immense knowledge of how scent affects the human body to create perfumes that don't just smell good - they DO good.
Dodd found a molecule in vanilla that, when smelled, actually boosts the libido. This led to the creation of the first medicinal perfume, called Scentuelle. Among his many roles, Dr. Dodd acts as a consultant and Director of Research and Development for The Orion Group Ltd. His extensive knowledge of aroma molecular chemistry has led to the development of scents that assist with everything from weight control to smoking cessation to promoting relaxation. His ultimate goal is to take these "healing scents" to the next level, developing perfumes to aid people with schizophrenia and other mental health problems.
